Leeds [UK], May 15 (ANI): Manchester FC on Wednesday denied mocking Liverpool supporters after winning the Premier League title on Sunday.
A video, which surfaced on the web, showcased City's players and staff singing a parody version of 'Allez Allez Allez' (song adopted by Liverpool supporters frequently heard at the Anfield stadium during 2018-19 campaign).
There were allegations that the parody version mocked Liverpool as "victims of it all" and that they're "battered on the streets".
Manchester City also denied that the lyrics are related to Reds fan Cox, who was violently attacked outside Anfield prior to last season's Champions League win over Roma, or the Hillsborough disaster.
"The song in question, which has been a regular chant during the 2018-19 season, refers to the 2018 UEFA Champions League final in Kiev," goal.com quoted a City spokesperson as saying.
"Any suggestion that the lyrics relate to Sean Cox or the Hillsborough tragedy is entirely without foundation," the spokesperson added.
The parody version of 'Allez Allez Allez' also mentions the injury suffered by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
City pipped Liverpool by just one point in the league standings to win the Premier League for the second consecutive year. Manchester City finished the season with 98 points whereas Liverpool finished with 97 points.
City faced Brighton in their final league games whereas Liverpool faced Wolves. Both the teams registered wins in their final matches.
Manchester City defeated Brighton 4-1 whereas Liverpool outclassed Wolves 4-0.
City next faces Watford in the FA Cup final on May 18 whereas Liverpool will take on Tottenham Hotspurs in the Champions League on June 1. (ANI)Get a daily dose of Yorkshire Observer news through our daily email, its complimentary and keeps you fully up to date with world and business news as well.
